UCU is the trade union for university and college lecturers and Jon spends his time dealing with issues affecting union members in both further and higher education. Prior to this, he worked as a lecturer in further education, teaching sociology at A Level and then training trade union representatives. Jon has written about changes to post-16 education in the RoutledgeFalmer ‘Guide to Key Debates in Education’ and ‘A Lecturer’s Guide to Further Education’. Jon is Treasurer of The Great Debate, a north east organisation that arranges public debates and discussions. He is also a parent governor at Hotspur Primary School and an amateur poker player.
